Dr Adrián Maldonado

Dr Adrián Maldonado is an archaeologist specialising in Viking Age and early medieval material culture. From 2021-2025, Adrián was Galloway Hoard Researcher as part of the Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. He joined NMS in 2018 as Glenmorangie Research Fellow, a project which culminated in his first book, Crucible of Nations: Scotland from Viking Age to Medieval Kingdom (2021). Before joining NMS, Adrián lectured in archaeology at the Universities of Glasgow and Chester. He received his PhD at the University of Glasgow in 2011 with a thesis entitled Christianity and burial in late Iron Age Scotland, AD 400-650. He has published widely on early medieval death and burial, conversion to Christianity, and the archaeology of Christian monasteries. Adrián is currently Project Curator for the Scottish Archaeological Human Remains Collection at National Museums Scotland.
